Chapter 14

FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME

Table 13.2 (p. 132) showed that half (twenty-two) of those clients whose order was converted after six months and who were followed up had high ratings on both task achievement and problem reduction. Although numbers are very small and any findings can only be regarded as suggestive hunches, we compared these twenty-two ‘successes’ with the other twenty-two probationers in relation to the following factors:

Social background including previous offences.

Agreement on problem and task as recorded in the task formulation sheet and as described to the independent assessor in the follow-up interview.

Problem areas selected for task-centred work.

Missed appointments and offences committed during probation period.

Employment situation.

Number of interviews and percentage spent on the task.

Methods of intervention.

Type of worker.

Views of probationers.

Reconvictions.
